Section 1: What Is Stress?

The Evolutionary Purpose of Stress

Stress is a biological survival mechanism, hardwired into our nervous system to help us deal with immediate threats. This “fight or flight” response releases a cascade of hormones—including cortisol and adrenaline—geared toward short-term survival.

In the past: Stress helped humans escape predators or respond to sudden danger.

Today: The “predators” are bills, traffic, deadlines, arguments, and health concerns—and the stress response often stays switched on for hours or days.

Understanding the Difference Between Acute and Chronic Stress

Acute Stress

Acute stress is short-term and typically occurs in response to an immediate perceived threat, challenge, or pressure. It’s the kind of stress you feel when:

  • You narrowly avoid a car accident
  • You’re about to give a speech or attend an important interview
  • You suddenly lose your keys and are running late

This type of stress activates the body’s “fight-or-flight” response—your heart beats faster, breathing quickens, muscles tense, and adrenaline surges. These changes help you respond quickly and effectively to the situation.

  • Can actually improve performance in small doses
  • Once the situation resolves, your body returns to balance

Think of it as your body’s emergency response system. It’s normal—and even healthy—in moderation.

Chronic Stress

Chronic stress is long-term and occurs when your body is repeatedly or constantly exposed to stressors—without enough time to recover. Unlike acute stress, which turns off when the challenge ends, chronic stress persists day after day.

Common causes of chronic stress include:

  • Long-term caregiving
  • Loneliness or social isolation

Over time, chronic stress keeps the body in a state of low-grade “fight-or-flight,” which wears down nearly every system in the body.

  • Disrupts sleep, immunity, digestion, and heart health

Telomeres are protective caps at the end of chromosomes that keep DNA stable. Every time a cell divides, telomeres shorten. When they become too short, cells either die or become dysfunctional.
